American Idol Mania Speaks Out About Last Night's Elimination Episode And Idol Gives Back

Last night's episode had several surprises for me, the biggest of which was seeing Carly Smithson in the bottom 3. Talent-wise I believe she should be able to make it at least to the top 5. I'm not sure what happened there. Did people just not vote for her because they think she's a shoe-in or is she just not as popular with Americans as the other contestants.

Former Aussie Michael Johns was clearly surprised when he was told that he wasn't in the bottom 3. In case you missed it, he sort of fell to the ground in shock. Kristy Lee Cook looked equally surprised when, after having been in the bottom 3 for several weeks, found out that she made it to the top 10.

My favorite part of the show was when Fantasia and Elliot Yamin were in Africa delivering bed nets to protect the African people from the devastating effects of malaria. By far, the most touching moment was when Elliot learned that an African woman was naming her newborn son after him. He was clearly touched and moved and I think I went through a half a box of Kleenex watching it. It's so great to see them using their celebrity to serve those in need.

Idol Gives Back will take place Wednesday April 9 at 7:30/6:30c. Last year's episode raised an astounding $76 million that went to help various US and international charities. It's so good to see Idol using it's popularity to benefit those in need in a big way.

David Hernandez Shows His Talent With "In The Midnight Hour"

After his standout performance of "In The Midnight Hour" this Tuesday, David Hernandez should fly through to next week. A little more soft-spoken than some of the other contestants, I think some underestimate his vocal abilities. Even so, judge Randy Jackson said, " I like that you started with a gospel vibe..." Paula Abdul complimented his "brilliant vocals" and Simon added an encouraging (sort of) "It was actually better than I thought it would be."

This 24-year-old Glendale, AZ has sort of an Elliot Yamin thing goin' on, yet he has his own distinctive sound. His musical influences include Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Alicia Keys.
